5. They offer a lot of free tools and options which helps save money.

This area of communications interests me a lot and is super important to all aspects of communications. Everyone who enters the world of communications will benefit from having skills in visual communications. It helps you start and sell your own business. This ability gives you an advantage over other applicants because you can do the job of two people, which is very beneficial because of the economic situation companies can't afford to higher someone with a deep narrow skill set.

Advertising makes the business world go round. Otherwise products would sit in a warehouse and never reach consumers. In advertising it is vital that you know the target audience you are trying to sell to and their needs. There are a few different type of employers you would work for: a media outlet, a corporation, and an agency. Within those areas you could hold positions such as: account managers, research and account planning, creative concepts, media planning and buying, social media, and traffic management. I would enjoy many of these different jobs however it seems like the time involved is beyond the time I would be able to put in due to the fact that I have one child and another on the way.

Brother Howard - Broadcast Journalism

There are long hours involved in broadcast journalism. Although I believe that this job is incredibly important it is not a fit for me. Already having one child, I am definitely not able to complete the tasks needed for this job. The first job out of school is the weeding process, there are long hours without making very much. When you move on to your second or third job your pay scale rises significantly. In order to get jobs in this field you must have at least one internship possibly two. In this program they will teach you the basics on how to shoot and edit video. This practical experience is very beneficial right out of school.

1) This website is incredible for those who will be eventually interviewing (which is most if not all of us) and gives amazing insights and resources we need to be successful. If you don't know how to answer an interview questions, it gives you a step by step formula to learn to answer all questions.

2) It also lists standard questions that most likely might be asked. Again this helps to prepare you to answer questions that are asked in a prepared and confident manner.

3) This website gives you tips on what to wear, how to sell yourself, and even things to avoid in an interview.

4) It also gives you information on what to do in a second interview, which is super helpful because for me at least I never think past the first interview. As well as a phone interview.

5) It also has a salary negotiating tool which I have never seen before and I find incredibly important. For example I am from California, born and raised. When I came to Idaho and applied for a job I had absolutely no idea how much money I should be paid or that was reasonable (obvious it was going to be lower than I was used to in California) but I didn't know by how much of a difference it would be. This would have helped me not look so clueless.

Lane Williams - Journalism

Brother Williams spoke about the importance of Journalism. He said that everything we learn about in the world is from Journalist. I guess I always knew this but hearing it spoken really impressed upon me the real impact that journalism has. This is an exciting time in journalism because they are making huge changes. Many people are being laid off because they are changing the way they give the world the news. There will be many oppurtunities in this field to gather information and present it in a new way. He recommended that those interested in going into Journalism should: learn to write, learn to edit, learn to tell stories, learn a high end tech skills (such as program iPad apps), and be an expertise and find your niche. Blog writing is an excellent way to start practicing these skills and master them.

1) Associated Press is a website that offers unbiased news on a global level.

2) They have over 300 locations world wide with 2/3 of their employees gathering information. (There are lots of potential jobs)

3) There are many aspects of AP such as digital department which focuses on providing information digitally. They also have a broadcast department which allows people to get the news on TV or videos online. As well as photography. After learning about Icomm I can see the connection to the different facets of the world of media and the experience Icomm gives you.

4) They do require you to request permission to email or print material from their website.

5) AP has a great standard that they hold themselves up to. Even when mistakes are made they are to correct them at whatever lengths it takes.

John Thompson spoke to us today about I-Comm. I was completely surprised by the amount of involvement the students have in this program. I was also impressed with how much real life experience the students receive through BYU-I. The communication program really does invests time, money and teaching the right skills to students to allow them to be more successful once they leave BYU-I. The two main programs that were discussed was the scroll and the Agency. These programs are both run by students and teach hands on techniques and experience that is needed. This definitely puts my mind at ease knowing that I can learn all the skills I will need for my future career.

1) The scroll- everything from the scroll is on this site. For someone who doesn't live in Rexburg it helps them to be informed with the things in town and on campus. This is especially helpful for students who are off track.

2) The scroll us an excellent example of what students are capable of producing.

3) This website is also student run.

4) The site allows students to comment on the articles while allows opinions to be shared. This is also a social platform encouraging thoughts to be shared and students to be more involved.

5) I really like how the posts all throughout the site are news worthy and positive. I didn't see anything that really portrayed a negative tone. This is a great way of showing students that just because your in the media doesn't mean you have to conform and make all news depressing. With that said I still think of course there are things that need to be reported on that are just depressing, but I am impressed that students at the scroll don't completely focus on those things.

3 Ways to Spark Your Job Search Using QR Codes

1) QR code of a business card, I have never heard of this but I definitely think this would get you noticed. When we looked at these in class I was blown away by the idea. People who have smartphones love to have applications for every task, after reading this article I downloaded the application to read the QR codes.

2) I have been hearing lately more about employers searching Facebook pages and other social networking sites to learn insight to a persons, personality, habits, and the character of a person. Rather than just knowing their qualifications the employers want to know the person and their family. This QR code is a perfect way to lead them to a blog that not only displays their portfolio but it could also give more personal information about the person.

3) Include the QR code and your URL into your header on your resume. This way it will capture their attention however if they don't have a smartphone they can still access your blog.

4) Optimize your blog so that it can be viewed on a mobile device.

5) Also have a QR code on your business card with contact information encouraging people who have received your business card to actually contact you.
